Congratulations to our two winners of our latest contest. They are:
Kristine Hanson who wrote:
I love to make quilts for gifts...ecspecially twin or throw sized...perfect for an adult to have, what adult still does not like to have a blanket on them while napping? LOVE your stuff..LOVE.LOVE.LOVE!
and Ariane who wrote:
I love these patterns. They are amazing. I like large quilt patterns and small projects. I always have a small projects on the go when I'm working on large quilts. Sometimes, I need a quick project, quick satisfaction to keep me motivated to get my larger project done. Thanks for sharing
Kristine and Ariane will both recieve our entire collection of Authentic patterns. Just e-mail us at info@sweetwaterscrapbook.com with your address and we will get them to you.
Thank you to everyone who entered! We certainly had fun reading your comments.
Now, for the Jelly Roll. This may be the quickest and most simple quilt ever! All the cutting is done for you, and you get all your quilting done while making the actual quilt.
For our quilt, we used one jelly roll plus about 1/2 of another. Of course, we would love for you to use the Authentic collection.
But any Moda Jelly Roll will do- such as this cutie from Camille and Bonnie:
Here are the instructions:
- Use 64 Jelly Roll Strips (this will make 32 rows).
- Cut 30 1.5” x 44” batting strips.
- Cut 2 pieces of batting 2” wide to be used at each end.
- Layer the batting between two jelly roll strips.
- Machine quilt down the center using a straight stitch or a curved one.
- The first and last rows use the 2” wide batting. Match the batting to the edges of the fabric strip.
- After quilting all the rows, sew together with a 3/8” seam allowance with a short stitch length.
- Clip the seam allowance 1/4” about every 1”. Don’t worry if the sides are not even- you will need to trim them after all the rows are stitched.
- Bind and wash on the gentle cycle.
- After removing from the washer, you will need to cut off the raveled threads.
- Dry and enjoy!

Congrats to Kristine and Ariane.

google rag quilts for more on the concept. great idea I will be making one. it should be about 46" x 44" and there is no binding the outside edge will be raw the the seams on one side. I rub my seam edge with a tooth brush to make it ravel more. Anna

I think you would have to layer and quilt the fabric you would use for borders, and then I'm not sure how to attach them.

why couldn't add strips to the sides to make it wider before washing it? the raw edge of the sides would be bound or sashed and the ragging would be in the middle of the quilt.

Not the best tutorial I have ever seen. Skips two or three steps. It looks like the quilt would finish to slightly smaller than 64 by 42. There won't be any batting in the seam allowances, because the batting is cut smaller than the strips of fabric. Samantha's comments sound right on to me. I just finished a "Jelly Roll Race" quilt (which was fun, fast, and beautiful), and I am looking for another jelly roll quilt to do. I think I might use 1 1/2 strips for each stripe, and just cut the batting from a longer piece - so the quilt would be around 60 inches wide, and as long as I want to make it. For me, the problem with these kinds of quilts is that I can't put a border on it to make it bigger (at least, I haven't figured out how, yet).

hiya ladies, Okay so from looking very closely at the pictures it looks as if the batting is between Two pieces, also it looks as if they are sew together on the top layer leaving the bottom layer smooth. Someone (Stacey) also asked about dimensions, I took the batting 1.5 and times it by how many you need 30, I believe and then added 4 for the other two that you need that are 2" each and I believe this should be 49" by 44", give or take. If you wanted to make a baby quilt I think you could just cut everything in half or lay everything out and they cut to the desired length. The edging looks like Bias tape, here is a tutorial link I found... https://sew4home.com/tips-resources/sewing-tips-tricks/bias-tape-how-make-it-attach-it I hope this helped, now, I could be WAY off about everything but I hope not. Happy stitching

Like another post I'm confused. What is on the back of this quilt. Do you sandwich the batting with the strips and sew all three layers together? It is a cute idea.
Posted by: Ginger | Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 06:58 AM
I must be missing something because as I understand it, you're sewing the strips wrong sides together and the back has exposed batting on it. Could you clarify -- how does the backing work?

Just letting you know I love this and plan to feature it on www.sewcanshe.com. Thanks for the tute!

How do you do the binding for this quilt. I am a beginner? Help.....
Posted by: Donna | Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 03:44 PM
Hi,
Am curious about how you did the edging? So one side of the quilt is a rag quilt and the back must be smooth correct?
If you could just help me with the edging-that would be great!!
Thank you! :)

do you think you could use flannel strips for the backing fabric regular cotton jelly roll for the front

Hi, I just found your quilt via pinterist. I love the fabrics in your example. Is there a place I can purchase them? I've never quilted but I think you're calling the supplies an Authentic Jelly Roll.

So, are all the edge parts on one side of the quilt. Does that mean the other side of the quilt is totally smooth?
Dimensions, please?

Okay, this will be my first ever quilt...I think I can do this!! I have one question...it looks like you have some kind of edging on this quilt. What do I use and how do I do that? What is the finished size? I want to make this a baby quilt. thank you so very much for sharing!

I'm very new at this, but want to make this darling quilt. Should I trim off the selvages before or after the construction, or will the selvages be covered with the border??

Can you tell me the finished dimensions of the Jelly Roll quilt?
Posted by: Kristen | Wednesday, September 02, 2009 at 01:39 PM
I love shaggy quilts but I never thought of making one with a jelly roll. I have several waiting to be used with lots of yardage - so I am guessing I will be cutting a few strips and making me a JR shaggy quilt.
